First of all, it is my first experience doing some experiment on android devices. I know a lot about Linux kernel but I have never studied any android custom ROM or kernel, Yet installing a custom ROM is not a big deal but here is the process that I have gone through.
Before I start it is crucial to mention:
- Installing a custom ROM requires rooting and rooting will void your warranty.
- Also, this process might cause bricking your device.
I used a universal technical way to install LineageOS on my Samsung Galaxy Tab II 10.1 with codename GT-p5100. You need
adb
(Android Debugging Bridge) software installed on your system which might be a Windows, MacOs or Linux. In my case, I used ArchLinux with kernel version 4.18.9 and installed adb through:There are many methods using fastboot command but p5100 does not reboot into bootloader: only recovery mode and Odin mode.
Rooting
We need to install TWRP first. Other methods of flashing a ROM like using Odin is only for Windows users.
Rooting Process
I actually searched the web and read almost every good article on safe rooting. the most famous one of them had 3 methods where method 1 and 2 didn't work cause no access to the bootloader. Methods for rooting
The method that I used was through KingRoot.
Also, check for the apk for android 4.4. This method installs su command in /system directory of your android.
Downloading
You can find a TWRP for p5100 here: https://dl.twrp.me/p5100/ grab the latest *.img version and place it in your Tablet External SDcard.
I personally didn't do this step but I regret it and I don't know whether it works or not. with my host system (archlinux) connected to tablet with USB, I got a shell to the tablet with adb (Before that enable Developer Mode on the device).
adb shell
when I shelled into the tablet I gain root access with su command. su
then get a recovery image from your recovery partition use:you have to find that xxx part by yourself just find the RECOVERY partition name.
this will backup the original recovery of your tablet in your external sd card.
Install
now use the same method but this time input file being twrp and output file the recovery block.
Recovery Mode TWRP
You must have LineageOS version 14.1 *.zip version downloaded into your external_sd card before going to the next step. grab a copy of Android-Andi unified ROM builds from here: Android Andi LinageOS 14.1
use adb to start recovery mode by software:
Or power off then push power and volume down simultaneously so It will boot into recovery mode.
Push the backup button and take backup of everything on your external sd card, this backup is your base android.
Wipe
Go back to the main menu and choose wipe.
- Choose the Format Data button and type yes and enter.
- When successful go back to wipe menu.
- Choose Advanced Wipe and then check everything except External Storage which is the last item and swipe to wipe.
Go back to the main menu and select your MicroSD and then find your lineage ROM and swipe to install. after install reboot to the system. At this point, there will be a black screen and takes time to show lineage boot animation. don't panic, it takes time to boot I was so afraid the first time I thought that I have bricked it so I was searching for a soft brick fix and that was when I saw animation showing itself. You might want to flash GApps too.
This is the whole story of me trying to flash LineageOS 14.1 to my Samsung Galaxy Tab II 10.1, GT-p5100.

Unless it is a hardware faillure (damaged eMMC), flashing a full firmware (aka repair firmware or 4 files firmware) may solved the problem.
Download repair firmware from here then proceed as you did beforen but preferably try flashing with the latest version of Odin (v3.12.3 actually)

Remember this:
- BOOTLOADER, APBOOT = BL
- PDA = AP
- MODEM = CP
- MULTI-CSC, HOME_CSC = CSC
